It was about 4 years ago when I made one of my first trips out to Terrenceville (Jenelle's home town) for a family visit. It was at that time that I saw my first caribou. It was an exciting moment and I soon learned that small herds hang out in the area between May-July.

Her father told me that years ago these open barrens would appear as if they were moving since back then the herds could reach numbers in the thousands. Apparently they developed some kind of brain worm that has killed off many and now herds are around 10-20.

This past weekend I was able to spend a great deal of time with this small group and other individuals spread out over this vast terrain. If you stay down wind of these mammals they will allow close views as they feed on the lichen. Occasionally you will get a very curious member of the herd and he/she will try to get your scent (as this female below attempted to do)

Among this herd there were a few impressive males. They had no where near the size of antlers that some of the older bucks can have but either way they were nice to see.

It was great to spend so much time with them..it appeared this herd was healthy and doing well. On the second last day of my trip the leader of the herd decided it was time to move further into the country and out of sight from the main road side into Terrenceville.
